Is it easy or difficult for you to express your feelings? Do you express your full range of emotions? What happens when we suppress a feeling? How can we use all our feelings to live a more colorful life?
Becky’s 6 year old daughter Lainey teaches us how we can use all of our emotions, happy, sad, silly, confused, angry, to live a more colorful life. Lainey has always expressed her emotions in a big way. But the last few years she really has been able to articulate how she is feeling in a beautiful, real way. I’ve learned so much from how she gives herself permission to feel freely, something many can struggle with.
Matching the Problem
Do your feelings match the problem you are experiencing? Sometimes we can over or under compensate our feeling and there is a disconnect. Lainey recommends we pause, restart and rethink how we are feeling. Am I facing a small problem or a big problem? Does the size of my feeling match the size of this problem?
Feeling All the Feelings
Feelings are the spice of life! It’s important to feel all of our feelings because it keeps us from becoming a ‘boring person’. Feelings are great to have and we need to let other people see how we are feeling. If we don’t express and show how we are feeling how can people care for us? It’s not fair to make others guess how we need them to show up for us.
If you push your feelings away it’s like you are living in the dark. Step into the light and let others see how you feel because it gives others permission to show up however they are feeling as well.
Listen to Your Body
Sometimes our body gives us clues of how we should be feeling. What is your body saying to you that perhaps you’ve overlooked? Feeling our feelings allows us to slow down and think about what is going on. If we suppress our feelings we actually create an additional feeling: scared. Slow down, listen to your body and give yourself permission yourself to feel what your body is telling you. Otherwise you’re creating additional problems and complicating your initial emotion.
Coloring with Your Feelings
It’s important to use all your feelings just like it’s important to color with more than a few colors. “If you’re someone who only has two feelings you are not going to make a beautiful picture. If you are someone who has all the feelings you are going to make awesome, detailed, experience and creative picture.” Lainey says.
Feelings are great to have so be sure to feel them all and by doing so you will live a more beautiful life.
