I’ve always viewed the world through connection points, never believing in ‘chance’, but firmly in fate and divine appointments. People coming, going or staying in our life for specific reasons and lessons. Some people we are meant to know for only a few short moments, others for a lifetime. Life is constantly flowing and washing moments of connections up to the shoreline.
Are all dots meant to connect? I believe so, or prefer to live a life that roots purpose into all things. I love the wonder that builds into our days, conversations and decisions. Will we always see the connection points, the birds eye view of the final picture uniting all the numbered dots on the page? Of course not, some things will always remain untied and many stories we won’t know the full impact this side of heaven but that won’t stop me from thinking about the wonder and intrigue of connection.
Have you ever had a conversation with a stranger that shifted your day? Perhaps it was filled with encouragement or advise that made a lasting impact on you. Maybe fate has reconnected you with someone from your past or someone that’s meant for your future? Or maybe it’s a connection we already have.
Last month I had a dark, low day. The kind of day that makes you want to stay in bed and shut the world out. But I didn’t, I couldn’t, so I quite literally drug myself out of bed and did the best I could. I was on the verge of tears all day. Half way through my day I started to connect the dots. I grabbed my phone and went back through my day. Every hour that day a friend had reached out to me through texts, phone calls or Facebook messages.
“Just thinking of you for some reason today.”
“I want you to know what a difference you’ve made for me.”
“Read this quote and it reminded me of you.”
“Hope you’re having a great day!”
“I knew this GIF would make you laugh.”
And the reach outs kept coming, every hour almost to the minute. My entire head and heart shifted. These people, some strangers even, took time out of their day to breathe life into mine. Their small efforts completely altered my day.
Do we realize the power we have to change someone’s day? What if we viewed every outlet in our life as an opportunity to serve others and put their needs above ours? Our neighbors, coworkers, customers, check out clerks, people we sit next to in waiting rooms, baristas, friends, garbage man. What if we stopped long enough to lift our eyes out of our own lives for 30 seconds and into someone else’s? That 30 seconds of connection could build life, energy and hope into someone. Think about the chain reaction that could have if we paused, paid attention to the nudge and then acted on it.
What channels are available to you that can help you love others well? Who will be brought into your life today that was always meant to connect with you? What can we give to others to help build them up?
Only you were placed in your day for your moments and your conversations for a specific reason. Your entire life leading you to the person you are about to hold the door open for, the conversation you’ll have with the waitress or the connection you’ll make with a coworker. Don’t miss it, connect to it and see what life evolves through it.
